Alaska - May 2008

Welcome to sunny Anchorage Alaska. We were blessed by the weather during our stay in the Anchorage area, sunny and warm... which is apparently an anomaly this time of year.

We arrived at our host's studio in Eagle River late Wednesday night, a couple of days before classes began so we could explore the area. We stayed in the small apartment attached to the studio, a very nice, quiet place tucked away in the woods. Imagine our surprise when we woke up early Thursday morning to this ...

Wandering around not 50 feet from our room was a moose snacking on willow shoots. Now, Tink and I had hoped to see moose while in Alaska, perhaps viewed off in the woods as we were driving around, but this was more than we ever hoped for. We immediately started teasing our host, accusing her of hiring "Moose-R-Us".

So, I snapped a few pictures and we went on our way for the day, a trip from Anchorage to Seward. We drove the appropriately named Seward Highway along the Turnagain Arm...

and then south towards Resurrection Bay.

On returning from our day in Seward we were treated to a amazing sight. During our absence, the moose had given birth, and for the rest of the week mother and calf spent most of the time just over the fence, in the woods. This shot was taken through our bedroom window, on our last day in Alaska
